Pain you came into my life

In so many forms

You pierced my heart to pieces

I shed tears

Whenever you’re around

You fill my life with sadness

But today, I said good-bye to you

Pain, you drove me to do things

I’ve never dared to do before

You took me away

From my family, my friends, my job

And most especially from myself

I’m dying so slowly, I can’t bear it

But today, I said good-bye to you

Pain, I will  let you go

There’s no use keeping you now

You taught me much

Opened up my eyes and my mind

I’ll remember you only as a reminder

Of the things I should not do

And today, I said good-bye to you, so I can start living

Today, I will start filling up my life

With thoughts of joy and peacefulness

I will now fill my thoughts

With dreams and aspirations

I will start fulfilling my full potential

And be creative and become the best I can possibly be

I said good-bye to you, so I could say HELLO!!! to life

Pain, today I choose what I will do with you

I choose you to be my master teacher

Instead of you enslaving and encapsulating me

I now determine how I will handle you

You will no longer run my life

I now view you as a challenge to overcome

And welcome you as an opportunity to discover

Pain, you are really a good teacher

If only people would welcome you with open eyes and mind

And perceive you as an alert system

For the things we think, say and do

That you are in our life for a purpose

And that we can choose you to be

Either a friend who pulls us up or an enemy who tears us down

As a counselor for people with addiction problems, this poem was inspired by listening to many stories shared during the group process and individual sessions. What I’ve heard, I thought happens only in the movies, but these are real-life stories of how people handled the pains and losses that contributed to their deeper problems and agonies.
